MY WOODEN CARS

These are my favorite projects in the woodshop.  I make them as durable as I can, and the grandkids test them for me!   :>)

The bodies are made out of a piece of fir 2x4 and the fenders are made of oak.  I've made the fenders out of pine but oak is harder and the fenders are more durable and less apt to break during rough play.  The fenders are glued on using carpenters glue.

I draw the body and fender shapes in a graphics program (see below)...print them out...glue the paper to the wood and cut along the lines on my bandsaw.  Perfect fit every time.  I can draw different designs and keep the same wheelbase dimensions.  I've saved several models and can duplicate them exactly.  I've had no breakages since making the fenders out of oak.

I cut the hood part off, shape it with my belt sander, then glue it back on.  The wheels have axles that go all the way through the body.

Parts of the bodies are rounded with a 1/4" roundover bit on my router.  When they are all put together I finish them off with a few coats of polyurethane spray.

They are suitable for display or for rough play.  Two of my grandsons have given them a thorough test on our tile floor with no breakage so far.

With the right tools they are easy and fast to make.

The design is simple and easy to draw.  You can make changes as you like while cutting it out on the bandsaw.  For some reason a couple of the lines on this did not transfer over to the HTML page.  But there is a center horizontal line cutting the fenders in half and also a line along the top of the roof.  But hopefully you get the idea.
