Special Olympics Invitation and World Winter Games in Idaho

Amateur Radio Volunteers Needed!

Idaho will host the Special Olympics Invitational Winter Games from 25-28 February, 2008, where approximately 540 athletes from eleven countries (Austria, Czech Republic, China, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Lebanon, Libya, Romania, Sweden, and the USA) will be competing.  The 2008 Invitational Winter Games are considered to be an important prelude to the larger 2009 event.

From 6-13 February 2009, Boise, Idaho will be the host for the Eighth Special Olympics World Winter Games, which is expected to attract more than 2,000 athletes from 100 nations to compete in seven Olympic-type sports including: Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, figure skating, floor hockey, snowboarding, snowshoe racing, and speed skating.  Along with the athletes, 650 coaches, 800 officials, and 6000 family members and fans are expected to attend the Winter Games.

Volunteers have always been an important element required for the successful implementation of spectacular sporting events being played on a world stage.  Amateur Radio Operators will also have an important role in the Special Olympic Games being held in Idaho.  The need for Radio Amateurs is not limited to the Boise area.  Hams outside of the Treasure Valley are invited to participate as well.  Yes, that many more Hams are needed if Idaho is to shine on the world stage.

The Southwest Idaho Amateur Radio Emergency Service is coordinating volunteer communications for both Special Olympics events.  If you are interested in volunteering for either or both events, contact Brian Adams, W7CVS, Chuck Robertson, KX7ID, or Rod Truax, AC7GL at (their call sign)@arrl.net.  You may also sign up by filling out a volunteer application at www.idahoares.org/2009specialolympics.html.
